SLCHC: Filling the Gap in the Saint Louis Pharmacy Technician Career Field

Many U.S. cities are experiencing a gap between qualified pharmacy technicians and the growth and number of pharmacy careers available. Saint Louis College of Health Careers is committed to filling this shortfall with practical training in a “hands-on” learning environment.

Some of the duties pharmacy technicians typically perform:

  • Preparing IV solutions. This involves mixing intravenous solutions containing medications given to patients in clinics, hospitals, and other medical settings. A pharmacy technician must have special training for IV solution preparation.
  • Assisting in filling prescriptions. This is an area in which pharmacy technicians can be of great help to pharmacists. Counting and pouring medications, delivering prescriptions to patients, and entering prescriptions into the computer are among the tasks a pharmacy technician may do while under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Office administration. This entails receiving, labeling and storing supplies and other administrative duties, including waiting on customers and working with insurance companies.
