St. Louis College of Health Careers (SLCHC) fosters an environment of positive change and growth within itself, the community, and the greater St. Louis Metropolitan area. The College places special emphasis in assisting the unemployed or underemployed and those seeking to learn new job skills, thus moving individuals closer to full economic independence. SLCHC educates allied health professionals to meet the ever-changing needs of the health care sector. SLCHC develops and refines programs based on current health care trends. Since its founding, the College has embraced those seeking an avenue through which to improve their quality of life.
Educational Philosophy
St. Louis College of Health Careers has maintained a fundamental educational philosophy since its inception, and is dedicated to meeting the educational needs and professional expectations of its students. The College strives to prepare students to become competent members of the health care community. To this end, the College developed an educational structure that combines theoretical instruction with clinical experience in a specialized field, and believes this combination will best prepare students for technical careers in health care.
Educational Objectives
The College's primary educational objective is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to allow them to obtain technical positions in the health care field. Inherent in our primary objective are three goals: 1) provide a thorough understanding of basic medical theory; 2) provide an understanding of the principles and practice of a student’s chosen specialty; 3) provide hands on experience in that specialty.
SLCHC now offers convenient distance learning courses in general education, and appropriate program specific courses. Distance learning provides students with an online educational alternative to traditional classroom settings and the time constraints they impose. Online courses are classes for which all regularly scheduled classroom time is replaced by required activities completed at a distance and managed online. Hybrid courses combine online and traditional courses, by replacing regularly scheduled classroom time consistently throughout the quarter by completing required activities at a distance and managed online. The ratio of face-to-face versus online time for each course must be established beforehand and cannot be altered during the quarter.
SLCHC provides adequate technology resources at the Fenton campus including: a computer lab and library housing 36 computers, 1 shared printer. The computers provided for student use are equipped with Microsoft XP Professional software and Hewlett Packard Pentium IV hardware systems. All students have access to the Internet and online library by Cengage; the majority of the textbooks also include an online counterpart. As of February 2010, all new students have been given a USB drive equipped with the student handbook (in electronic format) and adequate space to save notes, assignments and other work pertinent to school.
Distance Education courses are available for several general education and core classes for those students who qualify. For questions or concerns, contact Mrs. Ashley Hastey or Mr. George Dewey at 636-529-0000.
